About this app

eBay: Shop & sell online is worth considering when your priority is Chasing collectibles and rarities. Auctions remain the best mechanism the internet has for pricing one-of-a-kind items. Trading cards, vintage cameras, first pressings, and discontinued parts surface here constantly, and saved searches with push alerts let you catch new listings within minutes.

Start with Proxy bidding and offers: Enter the maximum you are willing to pay and eBay bids incrementally on your behalf as competitors appear. Many fixed-price listings also accept offers, so haggling is built into the platform rather than bolted on.

Chasing collectibles and rarities

Auctions remain the best mechanism the internet has for pricing one-of-a-kind items. Trading cards, vintage cameras, first pressings, and discontinued parts surface here constantly, and saved searches with push alerts let you catch new listings within minutes.

Buying used and refurbished electronics

The sold-listings filter shows what items actually fetched, which makes eBay a reliable price reference before any purchase anywhere. eBay Refurbished products carry a warranty and are often supplied by the manufacturer or an authorised vendor.

Selling from your phone

Listing an item takes a few photos and a description, and the app can prefill details for common products. Casual sellers use it to clear out closets; small businesses run entire storefronts through the same interface.

Proxy bidding and offers

Enter the maximum you are willing to pay and eBay bids incrementally on your behalf as competitors appear. Many fixed-price listings also accept offers, so haggling is built into the platform rather than bolted on.

Authenticity Guarantee

Sneakers, watches, handbags, and trading cards above certain price thresholds are routed through eBay's authentication partners before reaching the buyer. For categories flooded with fakes elsewhere, this materially changes the risk calculation on high-value purchases.

Money Back Guarantee

If an item never arrives or does not match its description, eBay refunds you when the seller fails to resolve the case. Coverage applies automatically to eligible purchases paid through the platform's own checkout.

Visual and saved search

Point the camera at an object and the app finds comparable listings, useful for identifying unlabelled items before selling them. Saved searches notify you when something matching your criteria appears, which is how experienced buyers win rare pieces.

Privacy & Data Safety

eBay collects the profile you would expect from a two-sided marketplace: browsing, searches, bids, purchases, and messages with sellers, used for recommendations and advertising. Its history includes a 2014 breach that exposed account details for roughly 145 million users and forced a global password reset. Buyers and sellers exchange names and shipping addresses during transactions, so a degree of personal exposure is inherent to how the platform works.

After the 2014 breach, eBay strengthened account security options; turn on two-factor authentication or a passkey, since accounts hold saved addresses and payment methods.
Personalised advertising draws on your searches and purchase history. The AdChoice settings inside your account let you opt out of interest-based ads, though not of data collection itself.
Sellers see the buyer's name and delivery address for each order, and message threads between parties are stored on eBay's servers and reviewable by its fraud teams.
An account is required to bid or make offers. Payment details go through eBay's managed checkout, so counterparties never see your card number.

Unmatched depth in used, refurbished, and collectible categories

Updates

The Android app receives updates on a frequent, roughly weekly cadence, mostly incremental refinements to search, selling flows, and checkout. eBay has been pushing AI-assisted listing tools, where the app drafts a description from your photos, and expanding the categories covered by authentication. Changes tend to appear gradually by region and account rather than for everyone at once.

AI-generated listing descriptions and better photo-based product recognition for sellers
Broader Authenticity Guarantee coverage and expanded refurbished storefronts
Live shopping events and a more personalised, feed-like home screen

Editor's Assessment

Our verdict

eBay has aged into a dependable marketplace with the strongest buyer-protection posture among the big shopping platforms. Buy with the Money Back Guarantee behind you, check seller feedback out of habit, and it is hard to get badly burned. Selling is where frustration accumulates: fees take real effort to calculate, and visibility increasingly depends on paying for promoted listings. Buyers can install it without hesitation; would-be sellers should read the fee schedule first.

What works

Money Back Guarantee covers non-delivery and misdescribed items with little friction
Authentication service for sneakers, watches, handbags, and trading cards
Unmatched depth in used, refurbished, and collectible categories
Full selling workflow, from photos to shipping labels, inside the app

What to know

Seller fees are genuinely hard to predict: final value percentages vary by category and stack with per-order and optional promotion charges
Search results mix in a heavy load of sponsored placements
Drop-shipped and low-quality listings sit alongside legitimate ones in many categories
Customer support can be slow once a dispute falls outside the standard cases

FAQ

Does anyone still use eBay auctions?

Yes, though they are now the minority format; most listings are fixed-price Buy It Now items. Auctions persist where they genuinely add value: collectibles, used gear, and anything whose market price is uncertain. Bidding activity concentrates in the final minutes, so decide your maximum in advance and let proxy bidding handle the rest.

Is it safe to buy expensive items like watches on eBay?

Safer than its reputation suggests. Qualifying watches, sneakers, handbags, and trading cards pass through the Authenticity Guarantee inspection before delivery, and the Money Back Guarantee applies if something arrives misdescribed. Still check the seller's feedback history, and stay suspicious of prices sitting far below market.

What does it cost to sell on eBay?

Most casual sellers pay a final value fee, a percentage of the total sale including shipping that differs by category, plus a small fixed charge per order. Listing is free within a monthly allowance. Optional extras such as promoted listings and store subscriptions add further costs, which is why estimating fees before pricing an item is worth the time.
