About this app

Etsy: Shop & Gift with Style is worth considering when your priority is Personalised and custom gifts. Engraved, embroidered, or made-to-order items are Etsy's strongest category, and in-app messaging makes back-and-forth with a maker easy. Order well ahead of occasions, because production time comes before shipping time on custom work.

Start with Discovery-first browsing: Favouriting items and shops trains a feed that genuinely improves with use, and curated gift guides beat generic search for occasions. It is one of the few shopping apps that stays pleasant to browse without a goal.

Personalised and custom gifts

Engraved, embroidered, or made-to-order items are Etsy's strongest category, and in-app messaging makes back-and-forth with a maker easy. Order well ahead of occasions, because production time comes before shipping time on custom work.

Vintage and secondhand finds

Anything twenty years or older qualifies as vintage here, from mid-century glassware to 1990s band shirts. Listings are one-of-a-kind, so favouriting and acting quickly matters more than on conventional retail apps.

Craft supplies and digital downloads

Fabric, yarn, beads, and small-batch materials come from specialist shops that often know their stock deeply. Instant-download digital items, sewing patterns, printables, clip art, arrive immediately and cost very little.

Discovery-first browsing

Favouriting items and shops trains a feed that genuinely improves with use, and curated gift guides beat generic search for occasions. It is one of the few shopping apps that stays pleasant to browse without a goal.

Direct messaging with sellers

Questions about customisation, materials, or shipping go straight to the shop owner, usually the actual maker. Response quality is a strong seller signal, and conversations stay on record for any later dispute.

Etsy Purchase Protection

Qualifying orders are covered if items never arrive or show up damaged or materially misdescribed, with Etsy refunding buyers even when a small seller cannot. It brought the platform's safety net roughly in line with larger marketplaces.

Reviews with buyer photos

Reviews include photos of items as received, invaluable when listing images are styled studio shots. A shop's aggregate rating, review recency, and how the owner responds to problems tell you more than any badge.

Privacy & Data Safety

Etsy's privacy profile is unremarkable in a good way: standard e-commerce collection of browsing, favourites, purchases, and device data for personalisation and advertising, with no major breach defining its history. The marketplace structure carries its own consideration, though, because independent sellers receive your name, shipping address, and any personalisation text you submit, and small shops vary in how carefully they handle that information.

Sellers see buyer names, delivery addresses, and the message contents needed to fulfil orders; you are sharing details with an individual, not a logistics department.
Personalisation text deserves a thought: engraving names, birthdates, and addresses into gift orders places family details with third parties, harmless almost always, but worth knowing.
Guest checkout exists on the web; the app effectively expects an account, which links favourites, searches, and purchases into one profile used for recommendations and ads.
Interest-based advertising can be limited from the account privacy settings, and regional rights such as GDPR access and deletion requests are handled through the same pages.

Updates

Etsy ships app updates regularly, with visible changes concentrated around discovery and gifting: gift mode, registries, and more editorial curation have arrived over recent cycles, alongside quality efforts like stricter listing enforcement that surface in the app as badges and filters. Search has been an active area, with relevance work attempting to separate genuinely handmade goods from lookalikes.

Editor's Assessment

Our verdict

For buyers, Etsy still mostly delivers on its promise: distinctive goods, human sellers, and a protection program that removes most of the risk from ordering off a stranger's photos. The reseller problem is real, so learning to spot genuinely handmade shops, reading reviews, checking shop history, noting production details, is part of using the platform well. Sellers face a tougher calculus of rising fees and ad-driven visibility, but that is a business decision; as a shopping app, this one earns its install.

What works

Unique handmade, custom, and vintage inventory unavailable elsewhere
Purchase Protection backs refunds for lost or misdescribed orders
Direct line to makers for customisation and questions
Browsing and gift discovery genuinely enjoyable in the app

What to know

Mass-produced and reseller listings increasingly masquerade as handmade
Prices trend high once shipping is added, especially internationally
Repeated fee increases have strained sellers, and some pass costs on
Search leans heavily on ads and bestsellers, burying small shops

FAQ

Is everything on Etsy really handmade?

No, and this is the platform's most persistent criticism. Policy requires items to be handmade by the seller, vintage, or craft supplies, but enforcement lags and factory-made goods slip through, sometimes at scale. Signals of authentic shops include production photos, a coherent product range, a personal shop story, and reviews that mention the maker by name.

What fees does Etsy charge sellers?

Sellers pay a small listing fee per item, a transaction fee of 6.5 percent on the sale amount including shipping, and payment processing charges; offsite ad fees apply when Etsy's external advertising drives a sale and are mandatory for larger shops. The 2022 increase from 5 to 6.5 percent triggered a widely covered seller strike.

What if my Etsy order never arrives?

Contact the seller first through the order page, since most issues resolve there. If the estimated delivery date passes and the seller cannot fix it, open a case; qualifying orders fall under Etsy Purchase Protection and get refunded even when the shop is unresponsive. Keep all communication in Etsy's messaging so the record stays visible.
