How Do You Act When You Have a Crush?

There are two versions of you: the normal one, and the one that appears the second an attractive person learns your name. That second version has its own texting rules, its own laugh, and occasionally its own escape routes. I have watched this happen to the smoothest people I know, so you are in loving company.

Be truthful with me here โ€” not aspirational, truthful. Seven scenarios, four choices each, and at the end you get your official crush behavior profile. I promise to be gentle. Mostly.

The audience is smaller than it feels

The mortifying replay in your head, the joke that landed oddly, the pause before you answered, is playing to a nearly empty house. Thomas Gilovich, Victoria Medvec and Kenneth Savitsky demonstrated this in 2000 by asking students to walk into a room wearing a deliberately embarrassing T-shirt. The wearers estimated that around half the people present had noticed. The real figure was closer to a quarter. They called it the spotlight effect: we overestimate how much of us other people are tracking, because we cannot switch off our own vantage point.

A related bias, the illusion of transparency, has us assume our inner state is showing. It rarely is. Nervousness that feels broadcast at full volume tends to read from the outside as ordinary quietness.

Why some of us go silent and others go loud

Geraldine Downey and Scott Feldman described a trait in 1996 they called rejection sensitivity: an anxious expectation of being turned down that makes ambiguous behaviour look like a brush-off. A slow reply becomes a verdict. A distracted hello becomes evidence. People scoring high on the measure tend to break in one of two directions, either pressing hard for reassurance or withdrawing before anyone can withdraw from them, and in their follow-up studies partners of high scorers reported more dissatisfaction. That is the uncomfortable part: the expectation can help manufacture the outcome.

Neither response is a character defect and neither is permanent. They are ways of handling uncertainty, and they get louder as the stakes rise, which is why you can be entirely normal around one person and completely unrecognisable around the next.

Small, boring bravery

No quiz can tell you whether somebody likes you back, and any page claiming otherwise is guessing with confidence. What is knowable is your own default under pressure, and defaults respond well to small experiments: one invitation with an actual time in it, one question about them that is not also a joke, one message sent without three rounds of revision.

The over-texter, the ghost and the accidental comedian are all doing the same thing, which is managing risk with the tools they happen to own. Naming the strategy usually loosens it a little, and that is roughly as much as seven questions can reasonably be expected to achieve.
