For most of the industrial era the trouble with alarm clocks was that they were costly and unreliable, so British and Irish mill towns solved the problem with labour instead. Knocker-uppers walked the streets before dawn carrying long bamboo poles, tapping at upstairs windows until they saw movement inside; some fired dried peas at the glass from across the road. Clients paid a few pence a week, and the obvious question of who woke the waker was a standing local joke.
The trade survived far longer than most people assume, hanging on in parts of northern England into the second half of the twentieth century. Mechanical alarms existed well before that. An American named Levi Hutchins is usually credited with building himself one in the late 1700s that rang at exactly one hour and no other, and an adjustable mechanical version was patented in France in the 1840s. What finally killed the job was cheap mass production rather than invention.
The nine-minute snooze is a later curiosity. The usual explanation is gearing: on mid-century mechanical clocks the tooth spacing made a shade under ten minutes easier to build than ten exactly, and the odd interval simply survived the switch to electronics.
A day that collapses because of a missed train is a distinctly modern disaster, and the railways had to invent it. Before them every town kept its own time, set by the sun, so noon in one place fell several minutes away from noon a hundred miles off. That was harmless until timetables existed, at which point it became dangerous.
British railway companies imposed a single standard time from the 1840s and the country gradually followed, with a few public clocks briefly carrying an extra minute hand so that both local and railway time could be read off one face. An international conference in Washington in 1884 settled on Greenwich as the reference meridian, and the global system of zones grew outward from that agreement.
So the seven small catastrophes below are entertainment, but the frame around them is genuine infrastructure: an agreed clock, and a network of people quietly assuming you are looking at the same one they are.
