Searching a grid is not one process but two, and the difference is easy to feel. Anne Treisman set out feature integration theory in 1980 with Garry Gelade: simple properties such as colour or orientation are registered across the whole visual field at once, so a single red item among green ones seems to announce itself no matter how many distractors surround it. Ask for something defined by a combination of properties, and the shortcut vanishes. Attention has to visit candidates more or less one at a time, and the hunt slows in proportion to how much clutter is on the board.
The habit of timing thought this way is older than psychology itself. Franciscus Donders, a Dutch physiologist, published a method in 1868 that compared reaction times across tasks of differing complexity and subtracted one from the other to estimate how long a mental step took. That subtraction logic still underpins the millisecond measurements in modern attention laboratories, which is a long way from a fruit grid on a phone, but the family resemblance is real.
Matching games invite a tempting claim: play often enough and your mind sharpens generally. American regulators tested that claim in court. Lumos Labs, whose Lumosity puzzles were advertised as a way to sharpen school and work performance and hold off age-related decline, agreed at the start of 2016 to a two million dollar judgment and to stop making such promises without evidence behind them. Scientists had already sounded the alarm: an open letter signed by dozens of researchers in 2014 argued that the industry's advertising had sprinted ahead of what any study supported.
The pattern that survives replication is narrow: practise a task and you get better at that task, with modest spillover to anything else. So a strong showing here means you have grown handy at reading this particular kind of grid, and perhaps that you spent a formative stretch of your life clearing coloured tiles on a bus. It is a game, not a measure of intelligence, and when a title insists that only a rare few succeed, nobody ran the count that would justify the figure.
