Anything you have to hold for a few seconds while doing something else with it lives in working memory, a workspace far smaller than most people assume. George Miller gave the popular figure in a 1956 paper titled The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two, and the phrase escaped into general conversation almost immediately. Nelson Cowan revisited the evidence in 2001 and argued that once you remove the tricks people use without noticing, the genuine limit sits nearer four separate items.
Those tricks matter more than the raw number. Grouping is the main one: a run of digits like 4 9 1 1 stops being four things the moment you hear it as a year and an emergency number. Skilled recall is mostly a matter of turning loose fragments into fewer, richer packages, which is why a chess player can glance at a real board position and rebuild it later, yet fares no better than anyone else when the pieces are scattered at random.
Clinical memory tasks are fussy for good reason. A digit span task inside a Wechsler battery is read aloud at a controlled pace, delivered forwards and then backwards, and compared against age-banded norms collected from thousands of participants. Nothing here works like that. You can scroll back, reread, pause for the kettle, or answer while half-watching something else, and the timer exists mainly as atmosphere.
So please treat the tier at the end as entertainment rather than assessment. It reports how one browser session went, not what your memory is capable of, and it certainly does not measure intelligence. When a headline announces that some huge share of people fail, no survey produced that share; it is a turn of phrase borrowed from advertising, not a statistic anybody counted.
Three things reliably help. Sleep, because consolidation happens largely overnight. Spacing, because Hermann Ebbinghaus mapped the shape of forgetting on himself in 1885 and later research showed that revisiting material at widening intervals beats cramming it into one sitting. And retrieval itself: pulling a fact out of your head strengthens it more than reading it again, an effect robust enough that many teachers now build low-stakes quizzing into lessons.
Most everyday lapses are not storage failures at all. The forgotten parking level was never encoded, because you were on the phone when you walked away from the car. Attention is the gatekeeper, and it cannot be persuaded to work in two places at once.
