
Between hunter green and forest green there is a real difference, and roughly nobody can point to it on the first try. Paint stores know this. That's why the little sample cards have names like 'Quiet Fog' — to distract you while your eyes quietly guess.

The retina has three kinds of cone cell, tuned to short, medium and long wavelengths, with broadly overlapping sensitivities. No cone reports a colour; each reports how strongly it was stimulated, and everything you experience as turquoise or ochre is assembled afterwards from the ratios between those three signals.
That assembly step is why colour constancy exists. A sheet of paper looks white under a candle and white again at noon, though the mixture of wavelengths bouncing off it differs wildly. Your visual system discounts the illumination and reports the surface, which is the more useful thing to know. The colour you see is a conclusion, not a reading off a meter.
Blue and yellow paint make green because pigments work by subtraction. Blue pigment absorbs the long wavelengths and reflects blues and greens; yellow absorbs the short ones and reflects greens and reds. Stir them and the only band neither has eaten is green.
Light does the opposite. Shine blue and yellow beams onto one patch of wall and you add their wavelengths, landing somewhere pale rather than green. This is why screens are built on red, green and blue while printers are stocked with cyan, magenta and yellow, and why people argue about whether a jumper photographed accurately.
Knowing that chartreuse leans yellow-green is a fact about English, not about your retina. Brent Berlin and Paul Kay argued in 1969 that languages add basic colour terms in a broadly predictable order, beginning with dark and light, then red. Russian treats lighter and darker blue as two separate basic categories rather than shades of one, and its speakers have been shown to discriminate across that boundary slightly faster than English speakers.
Paint-chart names are marketing on top of that. Standardised systems such as Munsell exist because ordinary colour words are too slippery to specify anything reliably.
Nothing here screens your vision. Colour vision deficiency is diagnosed with plate tests and clinical equipment, and the commonly quoted figure is that around eight in a hundred men of northern European descent have some red-green deficiency. If colours have genuinely shifted for you lately, book an optometrist rather than trusting seven questions on a website. Any percentage in a quiz headline is rhetoric, not research, and no score here measures intelligence.
