Can You Outsmart Gravity? A Physics Playground for Your Brain

Gravity is the most consistent character in the universe: no days off, no favorites, no mercy for dropped toast. It has been pulling on you since before you had opinions, yet most people never check whether their instincts about it are any good.

Galileo's genuinely strange claim

Heavy things fall faster than light things. It is the most reasonable belief in the world, it matches daily experience, and it is wrong once air stops interfering. Galileo argued in the early seventeenth century that all bodies accelerate alike under gravity regardless of mass. The story of him dropping weights from the Leaning Tower of Pisa comes from his assistant Viviani and may well be embroidered; the persuasive evidence came from rolling balls down inclined planes, where the motion was slow enough to time with the crude clocks available.

The tidiest demonstration arrived much later. On the Apollo 15 mission in 1971, commander David Scott held out a geological hammer and a falcon feather on the airless surface of the Moon and let go. They drifted down together and struck the dust at the same instant, on camera, watched by a substantial fraction of the planet.

Why an orbit feels like weightlessness

Astronauts are not floating because gravity has run out. At the altitude of the International Space Station, roughly four hundred kilometres up, Earth pulls on a body with about ninety per cent of the strength it has at sea level. The crew appear weightless because they and their spacecraft are falling continuously and moving sideways fast enough that the surface curves away beneath them. Newton set out the idea in the 1680s with a cannon on an impossibly high mountain: fire the ball hard enough and it never lands.

Intuitive physics, and what a score here means

Getting these wrong puts you in respectable company. Michael McCloskey and colleagues reported in the early 1980s that many university students, some with formal physics behind them, predicted that a ball leaving a curved tube would continue along a curved path, a belief closer to medieval impetus theory than to Newton. Naive physics is the default setting, and instruction chips away at it slowly.

Which is the honest framing for your result. This is a conversation about mechanics, not a measurement of anything. What it tracks is how much physics you have met and how recently, and any percentage in the title is a rhetorical flourish rather than a figure somebody collected.
