The calendar is lumpier than you would expect

Births are not sprinkled evenly across 365 days. In England and Wales, and in the United States too, the busiest dates cluster in late September, with a second thickening in the summer. Explanations usually mix seasonal patterns in conception with the plain fact that a lot of deliveries are now scheduled. The shape shifts by country and by decade, so any list of common dates is a snapshot rather than a law.

The empty dates are mostly administrative

The troughs are easier to explain than the peaks. Christmas Day and New Year's Day sit conspicuously low in national figures, and the fourth of July shows the same dent in American data. Weekend births have also fallen relative to weekdays over recent decades, because planned caesareans and inductions are booked into working hours.

None of that makes a date mystical. If you were born on the twenty-fifth of December you are rarer largely because hospital diaries avoid the holiday, which is a scheduling story rather than a cosmic one.

Leap day, and why shared birthdays are so common

The twenty-ninth of February exists because a year runs to roughly 365.2422 days, and the Gregorian correction skips the extra day in century years unless they divide by 400. So 1900 was ordinary and 2000 was not. A leap-day birthday comes round once every 1,461 days, which is about as literal as calendar rarity gets.

Shared dates run the other way and surprise people constantly. Gather 23 people and the chance that at least two share a birthday passes one half; at 70 it is above 99 per cent. The trick is that you are not comparing yourself against everyone else, you are comparing every possible pair, and 23 people make 253 pairs.
