
Every rescue team runs on a handful of very different people, and the good ones never fight over who does what. There is the one who charges into smoke, the one buried in gadgets, the daredevil who works the high angles, the calm medic, and the stickler who keeps the whole operation on schedule.

The hardest part of a large emergency is rarely bravery. It is working out who is in charge of what. After a punishing wildfire season in southern California in 1970, reviews of the response found that agencies had arrived in force and then struggled to work together: incompatible radios, overlapping orders, and no shared vocabulary for what a team or a sector even meant. The programme set up to fix that, FIRESCOPE, produced the Incident Command System, a standard structure that scales from a two-car collision up to a hurricane.
It works by giving an incident one commander and a small number of named functions beneath them, covering operations, planning, logistics and finance. Anyone arriving from another service already knows the shape of the organisation they are joining. It is deeply unglamorous, and it is probably the most widely borrowed idea in the whole of emergency response; versions of it now run public health emergencies and music festivals alike.
High-angle work looks like daring and is mostly arithmetic. Life-safety rope systems are built with enormous safety factors, commonly engineered to hold something like ten times the load they will ever actually carry, and rigged with a second independent belay line so that no single failure can drop anybody. To haul a stretcher up a cliff, teams build mechanical advantage with pulleys: a Z-rig arranged three to one means three metres of rope pulled for every metre the load rises, in exchange for roughly a third of the effort. Every part of it is checked aloud by someone who did not build it.
Rescue services repeat one instruction more often than any other: do not become the second casualty. Confined spaces are notorious for it. A worker collapses inside a tank or a silo, a colleague climbs in to help, and the same invisible atmosphere takes them both. Investigations into these deaths keep finding that the would-be rescuer had no breathing apparatus and frequently no idea what the hazard was.
That is why real teams are boring on purpose, and why the roles below are drawn from something genuine. Somebody assesses, somebody rigs, somebody treats, somebody keeps count of who is where. The quiz is a bit of fun rather than an aptitude test, but the division of labour it borrows is real, and it exists because improvisation is what gets people hurt.
