Which Decade Do You Actually Belong In?

History misfiled you. It happens more often than the archives admit: perfectly reasonable people get issued to the wrong decade and spend their days wandering the present with instincts calibrated for a different soundtrack, a different wardrobe, and a different sort of Friday night altogether.

The evidence hides in small preferences โ€” what you wear when nobody is grading you, which extinct technology you privately mourn, how you behave around a camera. Seven questions from now, this quiz will file you where you always belonged, somewhere between the seventies and the twenty-tens. Reassignment is affectionate and, regrettably, permanent.

1/7
Music first: what actually moves you?
2/7
What are you wearing when comfort is the only judge?
3/7
Describe the dream Friday night, budget unlimited.
4/7
Which extinct technology would you resurrect first?
5/7
There's a camera at the gathering. Where do you stand on photos?
6/7
Pick a weekend hobby from the pile.
7/7
To close: the phone in your pocket โ€” friend or parasite?

Laver's timetable of taste

The costume historian James Laver proposed in the 1930s a rough schedule for how a single garment gets judged as time passes. Scandalous a decade before its moment, correct in its own year, then dowdy, then frankly hideous ten years later, and only after several decades does it turn quaint, then charming, then beautiful. The intervals were never measurement. The shape of the claim is hard to argue with, because nothing looks worse than the very recent past.

Trend forecasting works on roughly the same principle. Forecasters watch what is worn on streets and in clubs, track what mills and fibre suppliers are preparing, and publish colour and silhouette directions two years ahead for buyers who must commit to fabric long before a shopper sees anything. A forecast is therefore part prediction and part purchase order that makes itself come true.

The decade you love is probably the one you were fifteen in

Memory researchers call it the reminiscence bump. Ask adults past middle age to recount the events of their lives and a disproportionate share arrives from roughly ages ten to thirty. Studies of musical taste find the same window, the fiercest attachments forming in adolescence. The usual explanations involve identity formation and the vividness of doing things for the first time.

Longing for a decade you did not live through is a different creature altogether. That version is assembled from films, reissues and other people's stories, and heavily edited before it reaches you.

A decade is a filing convention

Ten-year blocks are an accident of counting in tens. Cultural change is rarely polite enough to begin in a year ending with a zero, and the period people mean by the sixties or the nineties tends to be shorter, later and confined to a few countries. Eras get named afterwards, by whoever compiles the anthology or writes the retrospective.

Compilation is the operative word. Every past decade arrives pre-sorted, the tedious majority quietly left out, while the present is unedited and contains everything. That imbalance, rather than any real decline, accounts for most of the feeling that things used to be better.

Reassignment is affectionate

Seven questions about wardrobes and Friday nights cannot locate a person's true era, since there is nothing there to locate. What a result like this can do is give you an excuse to notice which borrowed decade you keep reaching for, and to remember that the version in your head is tidier than the one people had to live in.
